Look Back Series: Bollywood, 2001


Bollywood 2001’s top ten highest grossing films, had Gadar: Ek Prem Katha at Number One, Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham, Lagan, Indian, Jodi No. 1, Chori Chori Chupke Chupke, Ajnabee, Dil Chahta Hai, Mujhe Kuch Kehna Hain and Ek Rishtaa.
This was one of the extremely few years when Aamir Khan, released to Blockbuster films ‘Lagaan and Dil Chahta Hain.’
This year saw the loss of the legendary actor Ashok Kumar, who died at the age of 90. Akshay Kumar married Twinkle Khanna and the wedding was a Bollywood film industry get together with the who’s who there.
At the Box Office, the top earners of all times were the producers of Gadar: ek Prem Katha and actress Preity Zinta won the Best actress award for the film.
In terms of awards Dev Anand won the Padma Bhushan, Amitabh Bachchan the Padma Bhushan and Lata Mangeshkar the Bharath Ratna.
A new film released towards the end of year was the Box office hit, Ashoka. However, this film failed majorly with the viewers and critics.
This year saw a major breakthrough in terms of word wide viewings when Ashutosh Gowarikar's "Lagaan" was nominated for the Academy Awards under the "Best Foreign Picture" category.  This was the second time that an Indian film was nominated after Mother India in 1957.
