Amala is a trained Bharatnatyam dancer. She started her career with the movie 'Mythili Ennai Kaathali'. This movie turned out to be a major box office hit, after which she was seen in over 50 films. She has worked with great stars like Rajinikanth, Kamal Haasan, Chiranjeevi, Nagarjuna and Mithun Chakraborty.
While working with Nagarjuna in 'Siva', they instantly connected and fell in love with each other. The following year they got married. The couple have a son Akhil and she is also the step-mother to Naga Chaitanya.
After marriage, she gave up on films and became a social activist. She is the founder of Blue Cross in Hyderabad who works towards the welfare of animals and preservation of animal rights. She is also a yoga teacher.
