The Book-Movie relationship

Books and movies somehow go hand in hand… Well yes, so many movies have been adapted, inspired or directly based on the books. Devil wears Prada, Shopaholic, Lord of the Rings, The Da Vinci Code, Partner, The secret, Memoirs of a Geisha, Kite Runner and of course Harry Potter. But very few movies do justice to the books. The question is whether they are supposed to be exactly like the books; or, as a different medium, they have all the right to use their creative liberty?

As a reader, it is so much fun to watch the characters from the pages of our books spring up to life. When we read about the Quidditch match and then watch it coming live through the movies, it is so exciting… A feeling of familiarity! But it is always debatable whether the adapted books should be exactly like the movies or should they just be inspired. Movies like Harry Potter are completely based on the books and hence people who haven’t read the books are often clueless about what is going on. The explanation for this which the directors give is that the books are too long and everything from the movies cannot be shown on screen. But there also are movies which portray the books beautifully and do complete justice to them. Memoirs of a Geisha and The Kite Runner are two such movies which have successfully adapted from the books.
MOAG_BlogWhat is your take on this? Should the movies be completely based on the books or should they take creative liberty to change the plot to make it convenient to show them in the two hours. Tough question…even tougher answer… Think about it!
