FRIDAYMOVIEZ: Newsdesk - Weekend Box-Office

It was a crowded weekend at the Hollywood  box office for the second weekend in a row, as three major openers came up against a surprisingly resilient animated feature from the week before.  The top film of the weekend was the Liam Neeson thriller “Unknown”. (Concept: “I got into a car wreck and when I woke up someone had replaced me and no one knows who I am”)

The surprise hold-over was the strong performance of Disney’s “Gnomeo and Juliet”. Considering that this project was basically a dump until the last month, it is surprising that this cartoon is blazing past “The Princess and the Frog” and “Meet the Robinsons”.

There will be a flood of animated films over the next two months (Rango, Mars Needs Moms, Rio, Hop, Hoodwinked Too, etc), so it will be interesting to see if the success of “Gnomeo and Juliet” is purely due to the lack of family fare at the moment and if these far-more high-profile cartoons can actually match the impressive performance of this lesser animated feature.

Coming in at number two for the three-day weekend was the next big opener, “ I Am Number Four” (trailer/review).  A Sci-fi film, that initially did not do well at the box-office, but seems to be holding steady at the moment. The third major opener was “Big Mammas: Like Father Like Son”. The film opened with $17 million over three-days. For a $32 million comedy, this is certainly a win. In Oscar-bait news, “The King’s Speech” crossed $100 million this weekend, setting the stage for a big win next Sunday. Christina Aguilera defends US National Anthem mess at Super Bowl

After seriously fumbling the lyrics to the National Anthem at the opening of the XLV Super Bowl on Sunday, yesterday, Christina Aguilera was quick to defend her mistake, which unfortunately was witnessed by millions of viewers during the nationwide broadcast.
According to the Wall Street Journal blog Speakeasy, Aguilera’s publicist released the following statement from the pop star shortly after her performance: “I got so caught up in the moment of the song that I lost my place. I can only hope that everyone could feel my love for this country and that the true spirit of its anthem still came through.”
Although it was a heartfelt version of “The Star-Spangled Banner,” (national anthem of US) Aguilera perhaps put too much of her own twist on the distinguished anthem. Her performance has faced a lot of criticism by numerous blogs and Twitter users.
